Joyful Passion, Close-up Detail showing quilting on felt

Welcome to the artwork of Martha S. Heimbaugh

Fiber Art!  A medium that transcends language and culture.  We all experience fiber every day, so fiber is immediately familiar and unintimidating.  Painting, Quilting, Machine Embroidery, Felting, Sewing, Mixed Media -- these words describe my creative work.  Using quilting and fiber in expressive ways is my passion.

Background

The Fiber Medium

The Fiber Medium

My real world work experience started with research and engineering.  Eventually I opened my fiber art studio and later worked several years as the Managing Editor of On Track! Magazine, a niche magazine for the International Machine Quilters Association (IMQA) now out of existence.  Currently I am back to studio work.

The Fiber Medium

I work with many types of fibers, pigment paints, and dyes.  My quilted fabric paintings and 3D vessels are better known but I also wet felt and needle felt with wool to create abstract landscapes and 3D vessels.  I have a special interest in painting marbled fabrics (see above image) and have run a number of marbling workshops over the years.

Inspiration

Inspiration

My inspiration comes from God, nature and life experiences.  I love color and use it often in bold and expressive ways.  Craftsmanship is also vitally important.  Working with fiber is labor intensive and requires a certain perseverance which can also be an inspiration in and of itself.  Refer to my Artist Statement for more details.
