I create my Felted Paintings and Vessels from either 100% Wool (grown mostly in the USA) or a combination of 85% Wool / 15% Mohair (grown and harvested in the USA). I use mostly professionally dyed wools that have been permanently mothproofed but some wools are dyed in my studio. Unlike the pigment paints I use when painting fabrics which resist fading for 40 to 50 years according to the manufacturer, wool dyes will eventually begin to fade when exposed to long-term UV light (sunlight). So care should be taken to strategically display felted works of art away from direct sunlight. This will help ensure a long lasting and vibrant color.
I use both needle felting and wet felting techniques in the creation of my works. Also, I have developed a needle felting technique that utilizes a cotton based substrate. This substrate allows me to quilt the finished needle felted fabric with greater depth, texture, and control than would otherwise be achievable. Many works combine both wet felting and needle felting techniques.
