"Art that speaks to the soul."

"Art that speaks to the soul.""Art that speaks to the soul."

In the Garden, R. G. Endress Gallery

This show debuted at the R.G. Endress Gallery in Prairie Village, Kansas during September 2001, the month now sadly known as 911, when terrorists attacked New York City and Washington, D.C.  After 911 occurred, I am told that visitors to the show pondered deeply the words and images presented below.  Even people who were in the building for other reasons (other than art) stopped and walked the entire show, reading and thinking.

In the Garden, A solo show presented September 2001

In the Garden

The original goal of the show was to be visually pleasing and intellectually stimulating. Word phrases containing positive, inspirational, and thought-provoking messages, were linked with appropriate visual images. A short poem opens the show, describing the garden, and the imagery surrounding the garden as a metaphor to human life. The viewer then proceeds to view artwork and read words as they "walk" the "garden".

The poem reads as follows.

Think of a garden, and you have the essence of living.

Reflected within the garden's boundaries are the joys, beauty, and failures of life. Each garden is different, some needing more work than others. While some gardens are blessed with fertile soil, water, and sunshine, other gardens struggle to survive. All gardens require work. The more work a garden receives, the more enduring is its spirit.

The work of a garden is unending.

Think of a garden, and you have a metaphor to human life.

Welcome to my garden.

As viewers completed their walk, they were left to contemplate their own inner work that may be requiring attention in their garden.
